An Approach for Mixed Upward Planarization

چکیده
In this paper, we consider the problem of finding a mixed upward planarization of a mixed graph, i.e., a graph with directed and undirected edges. The problem is a generalization of the planarization problem for undirected graphs and is motivated by several applications in graph drawing. We present a heuristic approach for this problem which provides good quality and reasonable running time in practice, even for large graphs. This planarization method combined with a graph drawing algorithm for upward planar graphs can be seen as a real alternative to the well known

Upward planarization and layout
Drawing directed graphs has many applications and occurs whenever a natural flow of information is to be visualized. Given a directed acyclic graph (DAG) G, we are interested in an upward drawing of G, that is, a drawing of G in which all arcs are drawn as curves that are monotonically increasing in the vertical direction. Besides the upward property, it is desirable that the number of arc cros...
متن کاملUpward Planarization Layout
Abstract. Recently, we have presented a new practical method for upward crossing minimization [4], which clearly outperformed existing approaches for drawing hierarchical graphs in that respect. The outcome of this method is an upward planar representation (UPR), a planarly embedded graph in which crossings are represented by dummy vertices. However, straight-forward approaches for drawing such...
متن کاملCrossing Minimization and Layouts of Directed Hypergraphs with Port Constraints
Many practical applications for drawing graphs are modeled by directed graphs with domain specific constraints. In this paper, we consider the problem of drawing directed hypergraphs with (and without) port constraints, which cover multiple real-world graph drawing applications like data flow diagrams and electric schematics. Most existing algorithms for drawing hypergraphs with port constraint...
متن کاملHow to Draw a Planarization
In this thesis we study the problem of computing a straight-line representation of a planarization with a fixed combinatorial structure. By the results of Mnëv [Mnë88] and Shor [Sho91] this problem is as hard as the Existential Theory of the Reals (∃R-Complete). We present a heuristic called Geometric Planarization Drawing to compute a straight-line representation of a planarization. We take an...
متن کاملOn the Upward Planarity of Mixed Plane Graphs
A mixed plane graph is a plane graph whose edge set is partitioned into a set of directed edges and a set of undirected edges. An orientation of a mixed plane graph G is an assignment of directions to the undirected edges of G resulting in a directed plane graph G. In this paper, we study the computational complexity of testing whether a given mixed plane graph G is upward planar, i.e., whether...
